Beauty Budget. What’s yours? (a review of Jessica Simpson’s show on Vh1)
Have you seen VH1’s new show, “Jessica Simpson’s The Price of Beauty”? She’s come a long way since, “Is this chicken or tuna?”
If not, I implore you to make a date with VH1 every Monday night at 10 PM. It’s worth it.
If you haven’t seen it, this thought-provoking docudrama follows Jessica Simpson as she–and Cacee Cobb–travel through seven countries to examine global definitions of “beauty” and discover what lengths women will go to in order to feel beautiful.
I really respect Jessica Simpson for using her platform to provoke young girls (and grown ones, too) into thinking about our own definitions of beauty when surely, she could have instead made a reality show about finding love again.
And honestly–those of us who loved “Newlyweds” [raising my hand] and felt bad when she and Nick divorced, and then subsequently even worse for Jessica when she and Tony Romo didn’t make it–we would have probably supported, “For the Flavor of Jessica as the New Bacholorette Survives” had VH1 presented it to us.
Instead, Jessica Simpson’s return to reality television is full with welcomed substance.
While I’m not obsessed at all about beauty, I do love a spa date and therefore admit to contributing to the beauty industry’s multi-billion dollar a year profits.
How about you…? Here are the poll results…
Hmm…
Well, considering the economy–and in celebration of Jessica’s new show–here’s a way to trim your beauty spending:
Giving a sincere compliment to someone: $0.00
Apologizing to someone when you know you were wrong: $0.00
Forgiving someone even though you know they were wrong (and even if they don’t apologize): $0.00
Saying thank you out loud to someone no matter how small their deed: $0.00
Taking time out to explain something to a child: $0.00
Encouraging someone, no matter how young or old they are, nor how many times they’ve failed: $0.00
Listening when you’d much rather talk: $0.00
Offering a stranger a smile: $0.00
Giving a hug to someone you know: $0.00
How much money will you spend “on beauty” this month?
I love VH1 and Jessica Simpson for their new show and I hope all of you watch it!
P.S. Here is one of my favorite quotes of all time and I hope all of my young readers and girls in my family never forget it:
“When a guy tells you that you’re hot; he is looking at your body. When a guy tells you that you’re pretty; he is looking at your face. When a guy tells you that you’re beautiful; he is looking at your heart.” ~anonymous
